| Background |
Leyenda is an instrumental guitar solo. It was recorded
accidentally as Al was preparing to record another song. After a
couple of minutes of warming up Al liked what had been captured,
so he kept playing for six more minutes.
"This is straight from the soul with no frills," says Al. "It was
around 2:00am. I often think of my wonderful parents when I'm
alone, playing Latin moods, so I named it for them. It's a
combination of lots of ideas I've played separately through the
years which happened to come together nicely. As a result of
being recorded when I wasn't really ready, it has some flubs and
certain technical flaws, explained below. But it's the only time
I've recorded myself truly playing for my own pure enjoyment, so
in my very-modest music career it's an important recording."

| The "Flawed" Recording |
The recording of Leyenda has certain technical flaws. It was
recorded on an old cassette, resulting in a soft click throughout
the recording. Al moved around the room during the recording
(normally a big no-no), changing his position relative to the
microphones. This resulted in an inconsistent presence, tone, and
left/right balance. The recording levels were too loud, resulting in
some distortion. The reverb was set very high and was recorded
on the same tracks as the guitar. Usually reverb is on a separate
track so its volume can be very carefully set. Having the reverb on
the same track as the guitar eliminated the ability to reduce it.
You may want to adjust the tone and left/right balance of your
audio system while playing the song to improve your listening
experience.
However, we recommend leaving your audio system at normal
settings. We feel the recording flaws give the song a rawness
which enhances this impromptu, private performance by a musician
who has played guitar over 30-years.
