© 2001 Albert Mora
Background
The Ballad of Joe De St. Jean is a tribute to Samantha's
great- grandfather.  It was first performed at Joe's surprise
80th birthday.  The song features a line about each of Joe's
children and his wife, Ethel.
Lyrics
I know old Joe
From the way back when
Women were women
And men were men

Life wasn't perfect
In every way
But I'd trade ten todays
For one yesterday

Joe knows the time
When love was won
With a sacred vow
And an old country song

When Joe bought the bacon
Ethel cooked so sweet
And they raised the clan
Known as the De St. Jeans

And I would
Go straight back
If I could
It would be
Me and old Joe
In the way back when
Women were women
And men were men

He was long on work
Short on words
And he knew a good song
Has got a simple verse

But good old Joe
If he wanted to
Could sing a long tale
On each one of you

Sandra the star
Sure did go far
Daniel so good
Did all he could

Gary will keep you
On your toes
And only Beverly knows
Where Beverly goes
Sweet Cindy knows the shortcut
Straight to a man's heart
Sarah's pictures remond us
From the end to the start

And Frederick the Great
Well he walks just like a king
And beautiful Debra
Is a real live queen

And I would
Go straight back
If I could
It would be
Me and old Joe
In the way back when
Women were women
Ane men were men

Barbara's the heart
And the mind and the soul
Of the De St. Jean clan
Wherever she goes

And Ethel's in every
One of you
Everything you say
Everything you do

And you would
Go straight back
If you could
It would be
You and old Joe
In the way back when
Women were women
And men were men

Yes we would
Go straight back
If we could
It would be
Us and old Joe
In the way back when
Women were women
And men were men
